Clay is the material most suited to the concept of transformation and metamorphosis; an extraordinary medium for the Integrated Expressive Techniques workshop.<\/p>\n\n
To the touch, dry clay is rough, hard, and very fragile.<\/p>\n\n
When dry clay is nourished with abundant water and kneaded solely by hand, its appearance becomes shapeless, soft, viscous, sticky, and elusive\u2014at first glance, almost unpleasant.<\/p>\n\n
Only after careful working does it become pleasant to the touch. It is also worth noting that clay is a non-toxic material with healing properties. <\/p>\n\n
When clay reaches the consistency of an ideal dough, it is soft, pliable, and malleable, ready for any deformation and transformation. It can be shaped with the fingers and readily accepts impressions.<\/p>\n\n
The workshop begins with dry clay transforming into liquid clay. Dry clay is finely powdered using a hammer or mortar, spread on an impermeable surface, and then mixed with abundant water until it reaches a creamy consistency. Between the surface and the palm of the hands lies the liquid clay, exerting a strong adhesive power that makes the hands stick to the surface like a magnet.<\/p>\n\n
By rotating the hands, extraordinary tactile sensations arise, taking us back to a primal tactile dimension. Spreading the clay on the surface creates an ultra-thin layer. Applying some pressure first with the fingers and then a rudimentary cardboard spatula, clay is removed to reveal the colour of the white surface: traces, signs, and expressive drawings come alive beneath our fingers. <\/p>\n\n
Speed, direction, correct pressure, lightness, simplicity, and sensuality create engaging opportunities for sharing, bringing out profound expressive desires.<\/p>\n\n
Now it is possible to make some printing tests by placing a sheet of paper, pressing lightly with the palm and fingers; lifting the paper from one edge reveals the first print made with liquid clay. After several trials to master the technique, a large monotype print can be made (see photos or videos). After completing the process and thoroughly washing hands, they become soft and velvety, thanks to the nourishing power of the clay. <\/p>\n\n
